For Us By Us: Uni Magazine

During the semester I decided to launch a campus magazine titled FDUZine for the FDU uni goers. As Chief Editor my vision is to bring interesting news, issues that are affecting students, advice, events taking place and recipes to them. I also asked a few students if they would want to contribute articles for the magazine and yeap there were a few submissions.

The name of my uni magazine is FDUZine, it features students ideas, recipes, what’s happening around the campus or around Vancouver. It’s a lot of hard work but with a strong and dedicated team makes it worthwhile. I have attached a link for you to enjoy yourself, hope you enjoy reading the FDUZine.

Proudly African

Born and bred in Africa, Zimbabwe to be precise I feel I identify well with my heritage. I am a cultured lady, never forget where I came from (though I haven’t been back home in 5years), enjoy mingling and getting to know other cultures. When it comes to showing who I truly am I do not limit myself to speaking my native language, hanging out with people from my country only, enjoying my traditional foods but find ways to hang out with other African friends and blending in with them.

I decided to attend a Ghananian independence party sometime last month. I did not want to dress in the western attire so I made sure I had an African outfit. My country doesn’t necessarily have a national attire for the ladies but putting together an African fabric, with a design that I love was not such a difficult task. So I took it on myself to have an African piece sewn for this particular occasion. When the day arrived I was excited as I had no idea how to tie the headgear but I wanted my outfit to be complete and represent my true africaness.  Thanks to my Ghanaian friends I did represent and I have since taken a huge liking of the different African attires that I saw.

Not only do I want to dress african but I feel the need to make the attires available to my fellow zimbabweans and other nationalities who might have a liking for african attires.Watch this space as I am going to post pictures of the different outfits that I own and if you want to place an order you could do so.

Nandos Chicken

Tell any Southern African person there’s a Nandos Chicken in my neighborhood and here are some of the common responses,”Oh how I wish I stayed in your neighbor”, “do they have any of those marinating sauces, can you buy me some of those marinating and ship them to me,” “you have just made me wish I was back home enjoying a plate of peri-peri chicken ,fries ,cold coca cola drink and a coleslaw salad,”. I remember when it was a treat to get such a meal back in the day and how I used to look forward to having Nandos Chicken for lunch or dinner. A visit to the city centre wouldn’t be complete without me sitting down to enjoying a Nandos Chicken meal. Yea you might say how can it be called Nandos Chicken while at the same time you mentioning having fries and salad. Well Nandos Chicken is famous for its lemon herb or peri-peri chicken and to go along with the chicken one can order fries, rice, sweet potato fries or salad. My love for Nandos Chicken  food has never stopped and its arrival to Canada let alone different places in Greater Vancouver has brought back memories and the same cravings I had back in the days are always there such that I never think twice   pay the place a visit for another good meal. I look forward to every Nandos visit and always reminisce about back in the days with friends and family enjoying a meal.

Nandos Chicken has three different flavors for its chicken lemon-herb,medium peri-peri and hot peri-peri. Since I don’t like spicy stuff I go for the lemon -herb chicken, sweet potato fries and a bun to go. If you visit the Nandos Chicken located at the Metrotown Food Court you might bump into their $12.99 four legs and thigh deal, add your drink choice ,salad or fries for an extra cost.If you do decide to pay the place a visit expect to pay a lil' more than a McDonalds meal.

Lucky for me they are lots of Nandos Chicken restaurants in Greater Vancouver ,a couple in the downtown area, one at the Metrotown mall, one at  Queensborough Landing Mall(New Westminster),one in the Kerrisdale area too.

Here’s a link that can help you find one close to you.http://www.nandoscanada.com/sections.html#Our%20Restaurants

Shopping,shopping, shopping

I recently took a friend shopping, she was looking for good deals and knowing where the sweet deals are I took her to one of the many outlet malls i know Queensborough Landing Outlet mall located in New Westminster. There are not so many outlet malls in Vancouver as compared to Toronto my other beautiful home, but this is a place where anyone would be beaming from ear to ear cause of the good deals . This outlet mall has various stores located there, these include Dynamite, Guess, Le Chateau, Spring, Aldo, Suzy Shier, Rickis, La Senza , ESPIRT just to name a few. The location is good too as it is accessible by public transit, it has many restaurants for shoppers to dine in case they get tired and hungry. Dynamite one of the many ladies only apparel stores (sorry guys) has an additional 30% off on it already reduced ticket price.Oh when you purchase at Dynamite you get a 15% coupon that can be redeemed on your next purchase.[trick to obtaining this coupon is entering the survey within 5days of your shopping there]   Rickis has an extra 50% off on the last ticketed price. For a Vancouver outlet mall the prices are heaven sent  to my fellow Vancouverites but for Toronto shoppers I believe they will be complaining all the way through their shopping experience. Guess also has something going on there too but if you have the chance to visit Toronto you should definitely pay the Guess store at Dixie Mall a visit. The prices there are off the hook, you can find shoes going for as low as $30 and tops could be as low as $7. As the days get longer ,less rain and more sunshine it would be worthwhile to grab a pair of sunglasses at Guess(Queensborough Mall) which are priced at $54.99, i know i know $54.99 for a pair of sunglasses but that’s bargain as opposed to the regular $110/$80 price.

2 down 2 to Go

Its that time of the semester again when all students are busy on the books ,having sleepless nights burning the midnight oil,are good friends with coffee ,energy drinks anything that might keep them up. Lucky for me I covered my chapters during the semester so now all I got to do is revise and revise for those higher grades.Im loving all my classes by the way [two Finance classes,Management and Business class]

For my business class we had to simulate a game during the whole semester, the game involved competing against class members. the main aim of the game was to manufacture digital cameras, distribute to four regions, price the cameras, monitor our EPS,ROE,purchase shares when market was favorable,be competitive ,be corporate responsible and always try to stay on top of the game. The game was in operation from Year 6-Year 15, a bit challenging game but interesting as we learnt how to simulate a company and monitor some of the challenges real-life companies face. At the end of the game my partner and I came out number 1,our company had a good credit rating, good image rating, return on income was good for continuos operation. If the company had allowed our company was in a position to buy-out other failing companies. Overall I enjoyed the game, enjoyed working with my partner and if anything this game has taught me a lot on what to look forward to one day when Im running my own company.

The Things You Do For Love.

was wacthing CSI NY Episode titled "Thought" oh the things you do for love sometimes leave you questioning yourself why you do it but at the end of the day you thing,I only live once and what better way to do it but do it with the one you love.Sheldon was close to losing his all for the love of Camille. If Sheldon had being fired for his actions I sure would have stopped watching CSI NY.There's something about that and I love his new relationship though I'm a bit doubtful about Camille, only time an more of her appearances will tell.

Easy Going Club...

while studying with a friend he told me how he was in an Easy Going club..He had this club formed at his former university and he was telling me how the uni used to set funds so people could participate. So I was thinking to myself that would be a great club to form too and get students out of the so serious clubs and do something just for fun. This club would be solely for students who are not in the same circle of friends to get together, just about do anything ,sit and laugh, forget about books, assignments and all that serious uni stuff. At different times we can have a member have a guest speaker and just hang out for fun.

This club would help people relax, discuss not-so serious stuff just warm up to your classmates outside the campus area.

I hope he initiates it and forms it.
